Abstract

"I've got a plan and it's as hot as my pants!"

Figure 1. Lord Flashheart

Taking inspiration from the great aviator Lord Flashheart, this project is to build a competitive hydrofoil International Moth. The project is documented here so that we can go: "Hey girls, look at my machinery!", "WOOF WOOF!"

We also aim to document the design and build of a modern International Moth to provide reference data and interesting reading. This document is work in progress and so it will evolve with the project. This means also that the tense of the text as well as the table of contents may be a mess because it was only correct at the time of writing, and may not be maintained as a book but more of a structured blog.

The data provided is for info, and useful for the next iteration only. If it breaks it was too weak and if does not it was too heavy. Therefore data is always wrong and to be used with caution. However some data is a little more accurate than none. The main benifit of some data is that the next iteration can be better. Where possible we will try to give feedback about the quality of the data.

Building a Moth is a questionable thing to do. There is no real finantial or competative argument for it, however building a boat is fun, rewarding, chanenging and creative. A Moth is a great boat to build because it is small and there are a lot of design freedoms. If you are thinking of building a Moth then we hope this project gives you supporting data and information to make your Moth project easier and more competative. It is real buzz flying at over 20 Knots in something you made in your shed, so good luck if you are thinking of having a go.
